CATALINA ISLAND UNVEILS "BUFFALO IN PARADISE"
New Public Art Display Beckons Vacationers to California Island Paradise

CATALINA ISLAND, CA, May 21, 2002 Buffalo In Paradise the first ever public art display to be staged on Catalina Island is now open! Twenty-five (25) life-size, whimsically decorated fiberglass buffalo are on display for vacationers to enjoy in various outdoor locations throughout the seaside town of Avalon.

Buffalo have been an icon on Catalina Island ever since the original herd made their home here in the 1920s, when 17 arrived as "extras" for a movie. Visitors have always been able to see the real buffalo on sightseeing tours that go into the island's interior, but this is the first opportunity for people to enjoy them right in town.

In the last several years, numerous cities have successfully filled their streets with public art in the form of life-size decorated animals. What makes Buffalo In Paradise special?

"Catalina Island is unique in that it is the only island destination on the West Coast ever to sponsor an event like this," says Wayne Griffin, President of the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce. "The sight of 25 buffalo on display along our palm tree-lined, waterfront streets is an attraction visitors won't want to miss!

Buffalo In Paradise is sponsored by the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau and will remain on display until November. The themes of the buffalo range from whimsical to educational to patriotic. Visiting Buffalo, Buffalo Wings, and Catalina Nature Buff are just a few of the buffalo on display.

A self-guided walking tour map has been produced to make viewing the attraction easy and informative. (This free publication is available at the Visitors Center on Catalina and at most boat terminals.) Most of the buffalo are within easy walking distance from each other, and the ones that aren't are worth the trip!

At the close of Buffalo In Paradise, the decorated buffalo will be "corralled" into the Casino Ballroom, where they will be auctioned off at a gala event. All proceeds will be donated to local charities. Whether visitors are looking to buy a buffalo or just experience the fun of a gala event in the legendary Casino Ballroom, this is an event not to be missed!

Subbys

"Subby the Water Buffalo" is just one of 25 buffalo on display on Catalina Island as part of the Buffalo In Paradise public art display. The life-size, whimsically decorated fiberglass buffalo will be on display in various outdoor locations throughout the seaside town of Avalon until November.
